Virginia Tech is seeking a dynamic Director of Contracts and Agreements to serve as a critical and strategic leader of sponsored programs administration. With over $530 million in annual research expenditures, including rapidly expanding research and innovation capabilities across fields like neuroscience, next-generation wireless communications, cybersecurity, autonomous systems, coastal resiliency, and space systems, Virginia Tech’s leading research enterprise is diverse, dynamic, and impactful. The director will oversee a team of professionals responsible for negotiating and executing all contracts and agreements across the university with various external partners. The director must be committed to an inclusive customer-service orientation to cultivate and maintain strong collaborative partnerships across diverse constituent groups to promote and enable sponsored-funding research programs.
This critical position will be located on Virginia Tech’s main campus in Blacksburg, VA.

- Master’s degree or bachelor’s degree with progressively equivalent experience. - Progressively responsible positions of leadership in the field of research and grants administration, including directly relevant experience in higher education, or other non-profit, research-based organizations. - Demonstrated ability to draft and negotiate complex agreements. - Advanced knowledge of U.S. patent and copyright laws. - Experience and working knowledge of government contract acquisitions, the Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR) and its supplements. Familiarity with 2 CFR 200 Uniform Administrative Requirements, Cost Principles, and Audit Requirements for Federal Awards. - Ability to independently analyze contract clauses, including intellectual property and assess contract risk. - Demonstrated commitment to an inclusive customer service-oriented approach, concern for campus-wide service and satisfaction, and the ability to work collegially with faculty, staff, and students who possess varying degrees of contract and agreement negotiation experience. - Exceptional time management skills, including the ability to multitask, organize, and manage a broad range of projects in a busy, deadline-driven work environment. - Strong communication skills with a proven ability to articulate complex contracts concepts in a simple, meaningful fashion. - Skilled supervisor and coach, able to motivate or inspire both junior and senior staff. - Ability to handle sensitive information and maintain confidentiality with discretion and good judgement. - Self-motivated to learn new concepts and participate in new projects.
